Wow! What an April. Yesterday, I was all set to post about my birthday and then BANG, I got engaged. Thank you all so much for your congratulations and for your happy birthday wishes! And I thought 27 would be boring.
I had a wonderful birthday day, by the way: I brought a yummy cake to the lab and partied with my new co-workers, sue took me out for a sushi lunch, co-workers took me out for coffee and Costin took me to Gamelle for dinner. I guess it’s really all about food with me.
I was also the recipient of some amazing gifts. The one of most interest to you knitters is this beautiful knitting bag Jessica and Lellean got me. Just looking at it makes me happy - I love that colour.
I can’t believe I’ve already been 27 for a whole week. So far as I can tell, I may be getting older but I am definitely not getting wiser. The knitting is proof. At the beginning of last week, the Fable sweater was living up to its moniker. It was a true fairytale to knit the back piece; the pattern was simple but interesting and the yarn was so soft. I was Gretel, chomping away on the candy house. Then the witch invited me in for more candy. Right before bed last Wednesday, I noticed I hadn’t done the border thing along the button edge. I should have waited until morning, when there was more light and infinitely more patience, but I dropped all of the border stitches and changed a stockinette stitch border to a garter stitch one. Well, I couldn’t go to sleep with the sweater in that condition. What if someone broke into the house in the middle of the night and saw it. It would be so embarrassing – I would be devastated!
Then the witch tried to get me in the oven. After knitting the first front piece up to where the neck shaping starts, I thought it looked a little…short. The pattern read: “knit the last two rows 22 more times”. When I read that, I thought, “Oh, I only have to knit 24 rows”. I counted the rows – 24. I measured the front – 6 cm. I calculated the front’s length from the gauge – 6 cm. I knew this had to be wrong because the back was 21 cm. I check the Debbie Bliss errata for the sweater but it didn’t mention anything about mini front pieces. Two days later, I was still dumbfounded. I did the neck shaping after reminding myself that babies are really small, but I was still unsettled. It wasn’t until I tried to explain the problem to Brianne on Sunday that I realized that I had only knit half the number of rows. I am definitely not wiser.
In other knitting news, the fist sockapaloooza sock is finished and the cuff of the second one has been started to avoid SSS. The only problem is that Fable is so soft that I don’t want to knit with the Trekking. Luckily I have a trip to Sudbury coming up and if I only bring the sock, it will surely get knit.

That sock looks awesome! I love it's Rainbow-Sunshiney feel. I hope to see you Sunday night when we return. Maybe some tea and tete a tete is in order?

Congradulations to you both. This is sooooo exciting. I am very happy for you.
Knitting freakouts in the middle of the night have been known to happen to the best of us and it is no good trying to sleep, read, or watch Gilmore G reruns. You just have to fiddle with it even though you KNOW that you are probably not thinking straight and making things worse. Been there, done that.
